The issue has been beaten into a thoroughly near-dead condition and
should be euthanized on the track. Bottom line gives several options:

- Spend a small fortune on technology to address very real safety
issues - possibly exceeding the cost of the basic power-supply anyway.
This technology would be based on relays, connectors and cables rated
for worst-case situations. This would seem to be the best option for
manufacturers and lawyers.

- Spend time, care and effort to plan eventualities and build in
"manual" fail-safe precautions. This would seem to be the best option
for the small specialty & custom maker and DIY sorts. Those on the
order of Patrick Turner and such.

- Do a little of both. There are very good connectors out there rated
for significant DC current and voltage that, while expensive,
certainly reduce obvious dangers. This allows the designer to spend
more time on the less obvious stuff such as draining caps and other
potential dangers.

I would suggest that West first understand what is involved, and then
take a page from Patrick's book on these issues. Following your
rolling bomb hurtling down the road at high speed analogy, it is quite
common these days for individuals to survive 100kph/62.5mph head-on
crashes with minimal damage to themselves - the entire bomb is
designed against that sort of end result, seat belts are only a tiny
aspect of that thought and design. If West were to design his outboard
P/S from the ground up to be safe, reliable and effective, he will be
able to get there with probably little fuss and relatively low
incremental cost. But if he tries to solve the problem with a single
solution (just connectors or just a relay or just something else), he
will be adding seat-belts to a '57 Buick and expecting to survive a
high-speed crash by sole virtue of them - unlikely.

Kinda-sorta reminds me of the gentleman who walked up to the best
looking woman at a party and asked if she would sleep with him for
$5,000,000 (was a mere 1MM, but inflation and the weak dollar has
changed things). After stammering a bit, she allowed as she would. He
then asked her at $20 - whereupon she slapped him and asked him what
he thought she was.

He answered: we have established what you are, now we are dickering
over the price.

We have established the problem - the rest is dickering over the most
fitting solution. Coulda been settled in 10, or so, posts. Perhaps
less. But that would have been no fun. Consider this thread has had
bad information on state-mandated execution and so much more...
