As Iain notes, DO be careful with common sense and the NEC. There are
difficulties with HVDC that do not apply to AC, and so the connectors
must take ths into account. At least one pair of your connector(s)
terminals should be to a relay that will cut off AC power to the
transformer should the umbilicus be disconnected. Further, the
internal wiring must be suitable for the flexing that it will under go
- forever. The problem is that you are not designing only for
yourself, but for the next user, and the next and the next. You can do
anything you want in your own house for your own use - but unless you
consider yourself the only creature on the planet, that is not a
practical attitude for your intentions and the design that will come
out of it.

There are connectors for material-handling equipment controls
(overhead cranes and such) that carry high voltage, lock in place and
have fail-safe provisions, but they are quite large and include lots
of rubber. There are companies that will weave ArmorFlex cables for
you to-order, but prices run in the high-dollars-per-foot for it and
are typically base on minimum orders. Strain-relief is also a
significant issue and must be addressed, carefully. Again you are not
designing for yourself only.

There are lots of very practical reasons for OBPS not being used very
often. That is not to write that you should not do so, but it very
much is to write that it is not a trivial problem.
