Then how do you account for what I have seen?

Perhaps you'd find that screen wires are alligned as best they can
so every 3rd grid wire turn the screen wire is aligned. 

I just observe, and have seen glowing screens in EL34, but not so many
in EL84.
Usually, the Ig2 is excessive and I chuck the tube out.

Note that pentodes draw more Ig2 than beam tubes. Better g2 wire
alignment.

Tube makers never stuff things into their tubes without considering 
where they'll go, unless they have drunk a little too much vodka.
