I thought about this too, and it seems really expensive, however if you
include everything about making your own solution including

-tube sockets
-tube bases
-wire
-any passive components
-mistakes
-YOUR TIME

I think it'll come out about equal, or maybe even in favour of the THD's
- it's easy to underestimate the value of your own time, even for a
hobby project, and the cost of incidentals is also very high, though
spread over time.

On the other hand, another idea which might work, is to have two sets of
tube sockets, with a sliding metal plate over top of them, which has two
holes in it... if you slide it to the 6V6's, it'll block the insertion
of EL84's, and vice versa.
