I am assuming you are thinking about a cthode biased amp? With fixed bias, 
there are other complexities besides just killing the tubes Personally, I 
wouldn't go there...

I suppose you could lift the heaters to kill the tubes, but more
frequently, 
I have seen circuits that lift the cathodes. For example, in a 4 tube amp,

lifting the cathodes of two of the tubes is sometimes used as a half power

switch. This approach does imply that your PT can handle all 4 tubes with 
respect to heater current though, where as yours dodges that requirement.

As others have said, don't do this with the amp live.
