If you care enough to listen to only the very best, then one of the
lossless
codecs would be your best choice:
(1) WAV, AIF, WMA lossless, FLAC, Monkey, etc.
If more than about 2: 1 compression is required, then your best choice
would probably be chosen via the method of the weakest link. Determine
which compressed format is sup****ted by all existing or proposed players,
whether ****table, studio or home. That will probably break you down to
(2) MP3, MP4, AAC, or WMA.
If you have incompatible ****table players, see (1) and resign yourself to
making up special compressed files for each player type.
