This is usually not a motor problem.
Check for mechanical "dragging" i.e. misadjusted breaks, tape being
pinched
by worn heads or guide paths.
Try FF and rewind with the tape not threaded through the normal path.
Acquire a "fishscale" tension meter or compare FF and rewind tension by
hand
between like units.
On some units tension is adjustable via tapped power resisters.
Use non hardening grease on parts that slide. Use oil on parts the turn.
On some units worn tape guides can be rotated so the unworn surface is
what
touches the tape. Run your fingernail along the tape guides, if it
catches,
its worn.
