What don't you like about the Gold Channel?

I'd recommend that if you have only one mike preamp that it be the most
neutral one possible.  And if you are recording to a digital system, you
can probably dispense with all the other junk that comes along with a 
"channel strip" and just buy a straight preamp.  The John Hardy is the
first one that comes to mind, or the RNP.
