 Hum and it's harmonics.  At low levels I'm not sure they would
identify it as hum
but the absence might be "inky blackness" or some other vague
description.

Anybody can tell. Stick your ear to the speaker. You'll hear three things:
1. Hum
2. Semiconductor thermal noise
3. Your own confused thoughts.  (Yes, Scott, it's payback time for your 
wanton cruelty.)
