Re: Excellent Article on Gnd Loops

Ground loops are multiple ground paths with nonzero resistance that
provide a virtual antenna or pickup loop for noise, especially hum.

Since all grounds have nonzero resistance, having one and only one ground
is the real world fix.

Many times "ringload cables" provide the best answer. A "ringload" is
really an old term in this case, not for the load on a ring generator in
telco usage, but a (the old paper one worked best) shotgun shell whose
hull has been circumscribed almost but not completely at the point just
under where the wad meets the powder and a little glue put in the crimp
area, so the shell fails at the ring cut and acts as a solid slug. It
isn't done much anymore but the term describes also a cable that has been
circularly cut with two slightly separate cuts through the outer
braid/****eld/groundpath leaving continuity only through the center
conductor. It is done at one end and the "long" ****eld end is plugged into
the unit that is closest to earth ground. It provides ****elding but not a
ground path. This works well with equipment where all the grounds are
bussed internally. Sometimes you can just solder a single conductor to two
plugs and not even use any ****eld with good results.

That's why I urge the use only of homemade cables, i.e. bulk cable with
solderable non molded connectors. It devalues the store bought cables all
to hell.
