Agreed - a Mac mini would make a superb music server and would be about 
as silent as a PC can get. It's plenty fast enough for that purpose, and 
whether it's "proprietary" or not is irrelevant to that end (it's not in 
any meaningful way).

As to expansion, what would one add other than more disk space and 
perhaps RAM? Both are easily accomplished.
