I'll take your word for it. I've heard "virtual surround" from dedicated 
boxes, and been unimpressed.

There are no particular hardware requirements for DD and DTS. On a
computer, 
DD and DTS decoding are implemented as software. See
http://ac3filter.net/.

AC3filter is a necessary component of a GB-PVR based Tivo-like device:

 My  HT computer can play DTS disks, but my
particular 
interest is in synthesized surround, because it enhances my large, old 
library.  I feel it's a  pity that sound field synthesis never gained 
traction with hifi enthusiasts.
