Speakers to Go With Accuphase C-200/P-300

by "ggrosz@[EMAIL PROTECTED] " <ggrosz@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Mar 5, 2008 at 01:08 AM

I've had these Accuphase Preamp (C-200) and Amp (P-300) since I bought
them in the 70's. I had JBL L-300 speakers but eventually sold them
because of size and weight.

Now I'd like to get some speakers that are smaller but will match my
Accuphase equipment nicely. The P-300 puts out around 200 watts RMS
and has a nice tube warmth sound. I mostly enjoy classical music now,
whereas in the 70's+ it was rock and roll. I noticed that the JBL's
didn't image the instruments as well as I'd like, but it didn't matter
much when I blasted rock.

I don't need to crank up the volume as in the past but I do appreciate
having the power reserve that gives me nice dynamic range. I'd like
speakers that will give me details, the ability to image the
instrument placement and hear delicate sounds. I've read that
bookshelf speakers may more readily give me those qualities, with the
addition of a sub-woofer to get the bass. I don't know how true that
is, but I'd prefer having the speakers less obtrusive, so bookshelf
would be better in that aspect.

I'm bleary-eyed looking for speakers and could use some help trying to
narrow down my choices. I'm using my Mac (copied everything AIF so I
have the sound quality), wireless to my Accuphase setup. Speakers
will go in living room, not a dedicated listening room, and I'm not an
audiophile. I'd like to limit the speaker cost to between $1000-2000
total.

In short:
Match with my Accuphase equipment and be able to handle the RMS
output.
Sound detail, imaging is more important than raw power.
Smaller footprint/less obtrusive size is a plus.
Under $2000 for the speakers total.

Thank you very much for your suggestions,
Greg
