Joe,

I hate lavs. But, I have no choice in theater situations.

Monitors are a serious problem. Even without monitors, feedback is a 
problem in the FOH mix. AND, as the performer moves about the stage, the 
problem frequencies change (phase/frequency/distance).

My recommendation is to keep monitor & FOH levels to a minimum. Above 
that, I suggest that microphone pickup pattern & placement (costumes - 
especially hats) make a big difference.

Plus, tell the performers to speak as if they don't have a mic; as in 
traditional theater.
