So what - this is audio, not rocket science.

SPDIF connections often includes a trip thorough a transformer. So much
for
being purely direct.
SPDIF often completes a ground loop, which TOSLINK obviously can't do.
SPDIF can radiate and pick up EMI. TOSLINK can't for obvious reasons.
