I did some research after your post. There appears to be a ton of
different interpretations and opinions of the NEC in regards to
generator grounding in ****table use. And it seems the requirements
vary greatly from local to local. Here's an interesting thread on the

Here in Los Angeles, the general requirement is to earth the generator
(though the movie industry is trying to get that changed so long as
they can provide a genset and distribution with 100% isolation of any
contact to earth). And when renting gensets, the providers generally
do deliver and ground for you. I would imagine in location where
lighting is a possibility, a proper earth ground would be a must. It
seems like a good idea though as a matter of course IMHO, required or
not.
