I was posting in the church forum, but was told by the moderators that it
was absolutely necessary to post under my real name and not an alias. They
locked every thread that contained a false name.
I can understand the purpose for the rule, but it's not safe to use your
real name. You have to offer this information when you sign up anyway,
don't you? So, they DO have your real name on file. People do act
different
when their real name is exposed, but this poses a big risk to identity and
in personal lives. I explained to them that since they weren't willing to
relax it under my circumstances (and it really wouldn't be fair, so I
didn't
even ask), and I'm not willing to relax my own rule of posting under an
alias, I had to bow out. When I offered my explanation, they told me that
my circumstance was rare. There are a lot of psychos out there, and no one
is safe from people like this.
My rigidness is stemmed from a bad experience years ago when I followed
the
moderators' demand to post under my real name. The same site has relaxed
this rule sine, but not before it created havoc in my own life.
One day, another member - her previous boyfriend - got a call on the way
to
work. The Caller ID showed the call coming from his own home; she broke
into
his house. I won't even go into all the things she did to him. Freaky!
Because I was her friend, she came after me.
I had to change my email address and update everyone that had no
association
with her whatsoever. I was forced to cut all ties with every forum - even
the ones I hadn't yet visited but could potentially hold her scent - and
cut
all correspondence with every member. I had to change my home phone number
and remove my home address from Google and my website which I eventually
had
to pull. I haven't published a new one yet; I'm still waiting for things
to
end so she won't google my information. She still knows my home addy since
I
can't change that. I got a Christmas card from her in December and wanted
to return to sender, but was afraid it'd start something all over again.
This is the only other sound forum I've visited and would like to stay in
here, if it's OK. I was initially under the impression that my novicity
and
Christianity were not welcome, but then was told I was welcome. If I'm
not
welcome, please stop me now. But, I'd like a reference to another forum,
if
you know any.
I'd also like to invite my sound partner (the head of the "crew") in here
so
we can sync together (or sink together). He knows a lot more about this
stuff than I do.
Regardless of your preferences, I've learned a lot in here (as mentioned
over and over). I won't be offended either way; I just want somewhere to
go
to learn from experts.
Thanks!
Richard
