** There are in fact a  LARGE   number of SS amps that use output 
transformers  !!!!!

Almost every 50, 70 and 100 volt line PA amp ever made uses output step up

transformers  -   and some of them are not one bit happy about being 
operated without a speaker load ( or dummy load ) connected.

A few transistor guitar amplifiers used output auto-transformers  -   some

combo models by Peavey and at least one 100 watt head model by Marshall
that 
provided matching for 4, 8 & 16 ohm loads.
