Of course 500W means nothing tangible. It could mean power amp output,
power 
amp power consumption, speaker power-handling capability, etc, etc,
etc....

In reality it's a totally notional figure that sort of indicates an output

level somewhat equivalent to the average 500W self-powered speaker.

A more useful figure would be a sound output level with frequency
response. 
Or suitability for audience/venue size, which should also include gnre, I 
guess.
