YOu folks might be right about this, and I'd say my ears are
well trained.

THe only thing I'd weigh in with as that fine resolution in
differences goes away as sounds get louder.

I've seen too many consumer devices that don't provide
enough resolution with those stepped volume controls.
Trying to adjust the volume to comfortable listening without
waking up the sleeping woman in the next room at 3:00 A.M.
Push up, it's too loud.  Push the down arrow button to
decrease it, and you can't hear it.  THis is at moderate
volume.
