The thing is, (at least for theatre work) once the desk is set up, the 
master section (in my experience) hardly gets touched all night, so it 
really could be tucked away at the end (which seems more logical) thus 
allowing the individual channels to the right of it (In the current
layout) 
to be closer to hand.  As it is I tend to use the group of channels to the

right of the masters to sub mix the band (in the pit), which obviates the 
need to go there very much, leaving overall band level control back in the

master section, on the group faders.  Perhaps that was part of the 
designer's intention?  All of this is probably a statement of the obvious,

in which case I apologise.........
