When I build a s**** or set of tails, I use various colours of 
heatshrink on groups of channels, say red for 1 to 6,  blue for 7 to 12 
etc.and I divide them into the same groups near the start of the fan 
with same coloured tape. You can buy nice big self adhesive cloth tape 
high visibility printed numbers, which fit on an xlr just great. 
Anything which heps when you're crawling about in the dark with a 
maglight in your mouth is good.
