Interestingly, some of the cheap Chinese mikes are rebranded as
'quality makes' (or is that the other way round). For instance, I
recently bought several excellent hanging choir mikes from a wholesaler
for £6 each (about $12 I think) knowing that they are in fact exactly
the same mike as an AudioTechnica mike which normally trades out around
£50.
The only difference as far as I can see is the label on the phantom
power adaptor, and the seemingly generic plastic case the things come
in. The XLR to mini XLR power unit costs £30 if you buy it separately.
There`s a very common lav, which in chinese disguise is less than £5, as
a Sennheiser, it`s around £45.
Those Chinese 'NoBrand' lightweight headsets at around £30 ($60) are
excellent both in value and performance. I bought a couple because a
slide show presenter with whom I was working is very rough with headsets
and I didnt want him breaking my expensive Sennie. The Chinese cheepie
actaully sounds better than the £130 Sennheiser and if he breaks it it`s
no big deal.
