Actually, TOSLINK output is active for any type of recording, but it may
have SCMS data in it which, for a recording made from something like a
commercial CD, prevents some sound cards from recording "protected"
material. My sound card ignores SCMS, so I can digitally record a MD that
was originally made from a CD (say a "mix" MD or something). When I do
this
sort of thing I play the MD on a MDS-JE440 that I modified to have an
optical digital output.

Original poster is working on a Mac, so I have no idea if the RH1 sup****ts
software on the Mac to do the transfers since I don't have an RH1.
