Thanks for all the replies.  For some unknown
reason the static noise has stopped now.  Am
wondering if there is intermittent fault.

Am using mains power.  Rechargeable battery it
came with appears to be worn out - lasts only a
minute even after having done 3.5 hours recharge.
Am going to try AA and see if that helps.
