Probably yes would be my guess.  As others have said sometimes some
machines have a small amount of hum when using an electric adaptor but
not when using batteries.  Assuming you are using the right kind of
mics and batteries, not AC, the main plausible explanation is there is
something wrong with the mic recording circuitry.
