I'd say in general to avoid the 1/4" 8-tracks made by Fostex and Tascam,
because of tinny sound, crosstalk, bad S/N ratios, and generally flimsy
build quaility. Otari made some of the most highly regarded 1/2" 8-tracks
out there, but if you really wanted to go all out, there were several
varieties of 1" machines, by companies like Studer, Ampex, MCI, and again
Otari.
