I have no reply because when I record single channel I put the recorder
in MONO, this means that in my monitor headphones I hear both channels
(normally) just fine, but I'm never sure if I'm hearing both channels or
just the left in both ears. On playback I hear only the left in both
ears.
Your plug may not be perfectly seated in the jack, that's the only thing
I can think of, or, believe it or not, a bad ground.
