The Mini-disc gives you many options, Some have line-level inputs, some
have only mic inputs, some have only digital inputs, most have more than
one input option.
Personally I use a range of microphones when recording depending on the
venue, When ease of set up is needed I use a Sony Single Point Stereo
mic, these come in two flavors, self-powered (internal battery) and
Plun-n-Play, I have the first (Internal battery) the mini-disc can use
either one.
If easy of trans****t is needed and I am *NOT* singing, then I use the
Low-cost binaurals from Chris the sound professional These are in a
"Croakies" mount so for all the world it looks like I've got "Granny
Straps" on my glasses, but the recorder goes in my pocket so there is no
mic stand or anything else for me to lug, this makes it zero set up time
and very easy to move through a crowd before/after recording. NOTE: When
I've done this folks on stage knew I was doing it. In fact the director
once requested a copy since his Mini-Disc had malf-ed (Operator error)
on that concert.
When I have the time to do a proper set up I use professional quality
dynamic mics of the XLR connector type and a TAPCO mixer by Macke. This
means lugging mic stands and/or brackets, stringing cable, and a power
distribution box (hex-o-let, surge supressor thing or Power Strip)
Lots of options.
