Because Sony didn't want you to transfer MD's to PC when it made the
netMD's. They feared music piracy.
I got around this by using an optical digital output on a home deck which
feeds into an optical digital input on a PC sound card that ignores SCMS.

was transferring "cut" music from MD to PC for my daughter's dance
instructor. She's since moved everything to PC since the CD player

of her MD/CD deck died.
Sony obviously reversed this decision with the HiMD's, which made many
people who do "field recording" happy. The MZ-RH1 can even transfer
recordings made on old, "regular" MD's to PC via USB.
