Yes it is weird. It's almost as if the thing is designed to boost all bass
(perhaps to make the cheap, included electret mikes sound better?) and the
noise gets boosted on the same curve.

That is true. I have been happy with recordings made on MiniDisc. Either
using my sony ECM-929LT M-S stereo microphone straight-in or using a mixer
into the line input, The MiniDisc seems quiet and the recordings sound
very
professional.

True. I also have to wonder why there aren't more of these devices on the
market. After all, in these days of large-scale integration, it can't be
too
hard or too expensive to make SS recorders.
