The guy who made the more recent post said he could hear the spikes,
but you can hear most anything if you pump it up loud enough in your
ears so I don't know if that means anything at all. the thing that
bugs me however about the noise is the spikey nature. You'll normally
see a nice flat steady jagged but even noise curve. This thing has
such extreme spikes it makes me wonder what harmonics are doing in
higher octaves and if they are interfering with the digital encoding
and creating digital errors. I'm guessing the fact you see more
spikes as you go up in frequency that these are being created by sum &
differences of the lower frequency spikes. Also the way the noise
curve is heavily slanted toward the bass end is pretty weird too.
There is some question in my mind if the noise warrants 16 bit
recording much less 24 bit. Then there is the frequency response
issue which wasn't addressed in the H2 review so it may or may not
have been fixed. Personally I'm chomping at the bit for a nice flash
recorder but haven't seen one yet I would buy.
The link someone posted to the new lower priced Sony flash recorder
looks promising but it is a lot more expensive than the H2. I guess
you get what you pay for. one nice thing about minidiscs in the past
has been that they are generally thought to have decent preamps. Not
so good that some still think it necessary to add external preamps,
but at least better than what it appears the H2 has.

I wasn't too impressed the one time I held one in my hand either.

Unfortunately, I'd have to agree. It's hard for me to understand
since the noise specs of minidisc have been fairly good why the
M-Audio and Samson have been re****ted to have lots of garbage. You'd
think we've already solved those problems in small inexpensive
****table units.
