Even with the newest models that sup****t Apple Lossless format? Even if
they aren't considered good enough for classical music, that's a pretty
small market.

Good question. But I don't think that a few drawbacks will limit sales of
all digital recorders. The original MD units had drawbacks as well (from
what I understand, the first ATRAC formats weren't very good, so a lot was
lost to ATRAC compression), but they had enough advantages over cassette
tape that they sold well worldwide.
