IIRC, Group Mode came in with Hi-MD, presumably because with the new 1Gb
discs and recording formats you now have a potential for 45 hours of
recordings on one disc.
In order to help with organisation, you can use Groups to keep the
numerous
tracks in some sort of order. For example, if you had loads of songs from
the 70s, 80s and 90s, you could put them into their respective groups. If
you wanted to play just tracks from the 80s you could, but on another
occasion if you wanted to play all the tracks on the disc in random order,
you could do that as well.
Obviously, if you are using the machine only as a recorder, or if you are
recording just one or two albums per disc then Group mode doesn't help you
very much.
