Yep, a lot of functions are reset to the "default" even you don't want
them to be.  At least that is the case with my MZ-M100 which is a
generation before the RH-1 / MZ-M200 and probably similar.

I don't either even after reading the manual :-)

I think of groups as folders in which many tracks (cuts) can be
stored.  You can move tracks to different groups and create and rename
groups and tracks in Sonic Stage so it isn't too hard to get it
organized the way you want even if you can't figure out how to record
it that way.
