It's not too surprising. Prices often go up when items are discontinued.
Try and find an MDLP car head unit for less than what they cost new
while they were being manufactured. Not only are 99% of what's
available located in the UK, the bidding starts at next to nothing, but
by the time the auction ends, the price is over the original MSRP, plus
you'll have to pay anywhere from $20-$40 for ****pping to the US.
When my MDX-CA680X died last year, I did a lot of searching and finally
found a used one in the US for $20 more than I paid for mine when it was
new. After a couple of friendly emails with the seller, he included the
cost of ****pping in my winning bid.
Sony says they can replace the unit with a refurbished model, but they
want over $300 for it. That's $100 more than what I paid when it was
new. I've debated on whether to bite he bullet and pay them to swap out
my dead player so I'll have a working one when the one that's currently
installed bites the dust.
Even minidisco.com's mostly selling mp3/flash players nowadays. These
are tough times for MD diehards...
