Rob,  for speaker amps and mixers, and outboard gear, look hard at
Behringer
products.

For microphones look at Audix.  The OM-5 make a good all purpose vocal
mic.
The D-series drum mics are superb.

consider buying someone's used system... there are bands that break up all
the time where someone has a garage full of stuff they don't used and the
spouse wants it out of there.
