Thanks for making me aware of pro soundcards.  I was lost at sea and knew 
nothing.

Our needs are really mundane.  I was asked to help a non-profit group set
up 
to record books for the blind and illiterate.  Some of those recording
books 
would like to use the PC directly.  Others prefer a tape recorder and then

convert into digital afterwards.

You and Art have answered my questions on the PC side.  I personally am 
using a pro mic and a Marantz PMD 221  cassette tape.
