We never used a vcr much.  And I can't say we have more than a couple
tv shows that we really like, House and 2 1/2 Men.  But with the dvr
it is so simple to just hit the record button while looking though the
channel guide that now we record more.  And one thing that is really
nice is to set your dvr to record a show even if you plan on watching
it.  Then don't bother to start watching it until it is half over.
Now you can simply fast forward thorugh all the ads.

Direct tv probably has the most hd channels at the moment.  If you
only have one tv then it's probably comparable cost wise to cable.
But if you have several tv's then the price goes up because direct
adds $5 a month per tv.  When we had cable we simply connected the
other tv's and paid nothing to cable for the basic channels on the
other tvs.
