My cable box hooks to my tv through HDMI.  There once was a DVD movie we
rented back when we first set up our system with the digital audio cable
from the DVD player to the receiver.  I don't remember the movie now, but
you heard the planes and helicopters behind you before you saw them on the
screen.  We kept turning around looking for them.  ;)
