Thanks for your comments.  Yes, the DVD player is set for higher channel
setting (if I remember correctly, it lets me set both dolby digital and
dts.)  I did check that as soon as I set it up.  

As far as your previous comment regarding the TV, I recently found out
that
it only provides stereo sound, so in my thinking, there's no point in
using
a digital optical cable to try to get surround sound, it just isn't going
to happen. However, our new HD cable box does provide dolby digital sound
and it has been recommended by the TV manufacturer to connect the digital
optical cable to it rather than to the TV which would give me surround
sound for the cable channels, providing that the cable provider and the
broadcaster sends the signal in multi-channel format.  So, for now, I'm
just waiting a bit to see what happens.
