The "surround sound" derived from the analog inputs is no doubt Dolby
ProLogic; i.e. there is surround information matrixed into the stereo
channels that is recovered by your receiver. This is old technology; the
effect you get from true 5.1 (or higher) via a digital connection is much
better.
