That's the "aperiodic" part of the design. The idea is that the ****t is
"mass
loaded" That means that at higher frequencies it offers little resistance
to
air moving in and out of the ****t, but at the ****t's resonant peak and
below
it acts more and more like a plug in the ****t. This supposedly smoothes
out
the ****t resonance and gives tighter, cleaner bass.
OIW, as the frequency drops, the speaker acts more and more like an
acoustic
suspension speaker and less and less like a bass reflex.
I have heard critics of this approach say that it doesn't really work, but
I
don't know.
