Unless it's got to be new, eBay will get you a LOT more for your money. I
recently purchased a Velodyne sub for about $200USD which, although 5 or 6
years old, retailed for >$1,000 new. ****pping will be expensive, but it's
still generally cheaper than new, and you'll get higher quality stuff for
the same money.
The reason you pay more for a sub is that it has a built-in amplifier.
Even
smaller units might need 150W RMS to drive them, and the amp adds
significantly to the cost.
As a general rule of thumb, you DO get what you pay for. It's your call,
but a £30 unit will not compliment your nice amp and speakers very well.
As
you might surmise, the quality of gear rises rapidly with price at the
bottom end of the price scale.
