I suspect you maybe connecting to the TV's audio *outputs*.
Try it this way:
Do you have a VCR/PVR/DVD recorder connected to TV, if so
and it/they function, then you could do one of two things:
Connect your audio player to VCR's input, select that input
on VCR's tuner, then select VCR on TV, listen via "pass through".
Or
Purchase a budget switch box, connect VCR and audio device to
switch box and then into TV input that VCR had been connected to.
