It's am outboard Digital-to-Analog converter. If you look on the back of
your
CD player, you might find, that in addition to the right and left audio
outputs that take the music to your amplifier of receiver, that there is
also
a digital output jack or two. One might be optical (TOSLINK) and the other
might be coax (like the audio outputs except that there is only one of
them).
These two plugs output the digital bit stream from the CD. Now. on the
back
of the Audiolab 8000, there are corresponding digital inputs. Connect the
digital outputs of your CD player to the digital inputs on your AudioLab
8000
and then connect the AUDIO outputs of the Audiolab to your amp or
receiver.
The idea is that a stand-alone DAC sounds better than the one in your CD
player, however, the Audiolab 8000 is almost a decade old and if your CD
player is a good one and is fairly recent in manufacture, that might not
be
true in THIS particular case. All you can do is listen to your CD players
and
the audio out of the DAC and decide for yourself which is better sounding.
